Soft plush Porphyromonas gingivalis figure.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a species of Gram-negative bacteria commonly found in the human mouth. The bacterium has been linked to gum disease and tooth loss. P. gingivalis is capable of forming biofilms, which create a favorable environment for bacteria in the mouth and contribute to gum disease and tooth decay. The bacteria can be destroyed by changing oral care habits, dental treatments, and antibacterial agents. Maintaining healthy oral flora and good oral hygiene are key to preventing problems caused by P. gingivalis.
